Project Overview

As part of the hackathon challenge for monday.com, I collaborated in a team of five to design and build GreenWorks, a widget aimed at bringing teams and organizations worldwide together to address climate change. Our goal with this project is to raise awareness, foster innovation, and facilitate action towards reducing carbon emissions and restoring our planet’s health. We also ensured the widget aligns with user needs and business objectives in accordance with the  hackathon’s requirements.

Problem Prompt

The problem statement was provided by the monday.com hackathon, to empower teams to combat climate change and help organizations raise environmental awareness. Our assumptions  was that teams are willing to engage in sustainability efforts only if it doesn’t interfere with their workflows. This led us to reframe the challenge as a hypothesis: how might we inspire teams to contribute to positive environmental impact initiatives without disrupting their workflow?

Achievement and Recognition

Through user research and usability testing, our product GreenWorks won the prize at the monday.com hackathon with the spotlight of earning recognition and paving the path for widespread integration. Its inclusion on monday.com market place marks a significant milestone, validating its effectiveness and positioning it to make a meaningful impact on teams worldwide.

Path to the Solution

User Research

Before developing our solution, we created a research plan to guide targeted interview questions aimed at uncovering valuable insights. During user interviews, we spoke with employees from various organizations within our network who utilize monday.com for their workflow. Including those who have firsthand experience with the impacts of climate change.

Insights from user interviews:

  • Users are more willing to participate in climate change initiatives when they perceive a personal benefit

  • Working professionals desire flexibility in notifications, allowing them to tailor their experience based on individual preferences and schedules

  • Users are aware of the impending doom and how human behaviors affect the world

Ideation and Design Development

Our team conducted MuShCoWo and Feature Prioritization workshops to identify the essential components for our Minimum Viable Product (MVP). Once we confirmed the key features for the widget, we initiated a sketching session to explore user-centered design concepts. The goal was to purpose layouts and interactions that aligned with user needs and create a seamless experience.

Key features:

  • Progress Bar: Visualize the team’s collective efforts with a progress bar, tracking the status of the overall goal and allowing for the addition of new tasks each month.

  • Effortless Check-Ins: Stay on track with the GreenWorks Widget, enabling users to update their progress in under 5 seconds, ensuring minimal description to productivity.

  • Admin View: Grant administrative control with a designated Admin role, allowing customization of monthly goals and success metrics, along with automated reminders to enhance team accountability.

I designed the interface for GreenWorks using a custom design system that I built from the ground up, incorporating our brand’s colors and typography. One of the requirements for the hackathon was to ensure compatibility in both light and dark mode. After finalizing the designs, we conducted two rounds of usability testing to gather actionable feedback and iterate the product towards a more user-friendly experience.

During the testing sessions, most users struggled to apply a checklist for their monthly goals due to unclear UX writing and difficulty locating the button to access the widget. As for the second round of testing, we noticed that users are able to complete their tasks which resulted in a 5% increase in usage.

Next Steps

  • Iterate the designs by launching a third round of testing

  • Apply additional features to support our users in completing their tasks efficiently and effectively

Learning Outcomes

Throughout monday.com Hackathon challenge, I had the opportunity to collaborate with designers, researchers, and our developer to launch GreenWorks. This experience reinforced the importance of designing with the user in mind over pixel-perfect aesthetics, while also enhancing my UI skills and decisions-making abilities. I recommend for those who are transitioning into the UX field to explore hackathons as it provides experience and skill development.
