Background
As part of the hackathon challenge for monday.com, I collaborated in a team of five to design and build GreenWorks, a widget aimed at bringing teams and organizations worldwide together to address climate change. Our goal with GreenWorks was to raise awareness, foster innovation, and facilitate action towards reducing carbon emissions and restoring our planet’s health.
Problem
The challenge set by the monday.com hackathon is to provide teams with the means to combat climate change and assist organizations in spreading awareness. Our theory posits that teams are eager to engage in environmental efforts only if it doesn’t interfere with their workflow and completing daily tasks. So, how might we inspire teams to contribute to positive environmental impact initiatives without disrupting their workflow?
Solution
Gamified experience:
Progress Bar: Visualize the team’s collective efforts with a progress bar, tracking the status of the overall goal and allowing for the addition of new tasks each month.
Effortless Check-Ins: Stay on track with the GreenWorks Widget, enabling users to update their progress in under 5 seconds, ensuring minimal description to productivity.
Admin View: Grant administrative control with a designated Admin role, allowing customization of monthly goals and success metrics, along with automated reminders to enhance team accountability.
How I arrived at the solution?
Insights from User Interviews
For the user interviews, I targeted individuals within our network who utilize monday.com for their workflow and those who have firsthand experience with the impacts of climate change.
During the interviews, I discovered that:
- Users are more willing to participate in climate change initiatives when they perceive a personal benefit.
- Working professionals desire flexibility in notifications, allowing them to tailor their experience based on individual preferences and schedules.
- Users are aware of the impending doom and how human behaviors affect the world.

After gathering insights from user interviews, we’ve gained a deeper understanding of user motivations and how to inspire them in environmental action. We’ll transform these insights into tangible design solutions.
Ideation
Utilizing methodologies like MuShCoWo and Feature Prioritization, we’ll identify the essential components for our Minimum Viable Product (MVP). Following this, we’ll sketch proposed designs during a design studio session. We aim to create a user-centric platform that not only addresses the problem statement but also provides a meaningful engagement and action towards combating climate change.

Wed and Widget Design
I designed the interface for GreenWorks, ensuring compatibility with both light and dark mode to meet the requirements of the monday.com hackathon. Afterward, we conducted two rounds of unmoderated usability tests using Maze. These tests were conducted on the proposed design to evaluate the ease of navigation and helping users achieve their goals.

Achievement and Recognition
GreenWorks won the prize at the monday.com hackathon with the spotlight of earning recognition and paving the path for widespread integration. Its inclusion on monday.com market place marks a significant milestone, validating its effectiveness and positioning it to make a meaningful impact on teams worldwide.
Learnings and Future Iterations
Throughout monday.com Hackathon challenge, I had the opportunity to collaborate with designers, researchers, and our developer to launch GreenWorks. This experience reinforced the importance of designing with the user in mind over pixel-perfect aesthetics, while also enhancing my UI skills and decisions-making abilities. I recommend for those who are transitioning into the UX field to explore hackathons as it provides experience and skill development.
